Read the Book of Mormon With Us!

English
We have set a goal in our mission to read the entire Book of Mormon by General Conference on April 4-5th. We would like to invite you to join with us.  We had already started when I realized how fun it would be for you to read with us too!  If you don’t have time to catch up to where we are then just start where we are this week!

You can invite Aunts, Uncles, neighbors - anyone - to join in as well. We want to let the missionaries know how many people are reading with them, to help them feel your love and support as they strengthen their testimony of our Savior Jesus Christ by reading the Book of Mormon.

In the sidebar of the blog is a weekly reading calendar so you'll know where we are.  There are 642 pages in the Spanish Book of Mormon and  531 pages in the English Book of Mormon.  Beginning January 12 there are 84 days until General Conference. To finish in time we will need to  read almost 8 pages per day in Spanish or little more than 6 pages per day in English. Then on January 18 we must be on page 56 in Spanish or on page 43 in English.

Please leave a comment below if you are willing to join us in this endeavor, and let us know how many people are in your family if your whole family is participating!

What a great Story!

A parent of one of our missionaries sent me this story.  It is so fun and I thought you might enjoy it too!  Here is the story....

In the late 70’s Tom was not a member of the church. He liked a girl who was.  Her name was Linda Orchard. Linda had sisters, man, did she have sisters. Four of them.  They were all beautiful and outgoing, quite a combination. All good members of the church. The girl’s dad was the Ward mission leader.  His name was Bob.  Bob did not have the opportunity to serve a mission, so he loved his calling, and served with enthusiasm.

Every now and again, one of the girls would bring around a young man who was not a member of the church.  Since they were beautiful, outgoing, and fun, they attracted a lot of attention from boys and girls.  Whenever these friends would come over to the Orchard home, they were always greeted warmly and as one of the family by Momma Orchard. (Beth) Bobs wife and mom to all these girls.

Well Tom came over and felt something that he had not felt before.  As he got to know the family, he soon learned that they were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon).  Soon he wanted to learn more. Bob invited him to be taught about the church, in his home by the missionary’s.  Linda and Tom stopped dating, but Tom’s desire for the truth only grew.

With the help of the Orchard family, Bob, Beth, Karen, Suzanne, Linda, Lisa, David, Julie, and Robby, Tom Kauffman was baptized into the church.

Now fast forward, 30 years or so.

Suzanne (Orchard) Wessel has a son Clay who was called on a mission for the church to Neuquén, Argentina.  A very remote mission for the church. She was on the mission web site and noticed a post by a Father of a missionary who was just called to Neuquén, Argentina.  His name….. Tom Kauffman.  She wondered, could this be the same Tom Kauffman who was taught the gospel in my home?  She reached out, and it was. She started out by saying "I don't know if you remember me ". Tom said of course he did and expressed his great love for the Orchard family, and what they did for him.and how they changed his life and they life of his family. Here is a picture of the two missionary’s, they happened to meet up on a transfer. It is truly a small world that is full of tender mercies.

Los Refuerzos-Those Reinforcements-Our Newest Missionaries (Meeting their Trainers)

Our New Companionships!

These are big sandwiches!

They were so excited and nervous to get started in their new areas!

Los Refuerzos-Those Reinforcements-Our Newest Missionaries (Interviews and Training)

Please welcome our newest missionaries!  We don't call our new missionaries "Greenies" or "Newbys".  We call them our "Refuerzos" which means reinforcement in Spanish!  We love their enthusiasm and their desire to serve.  They bring so much energy to the mission!

Interviews and Training

After they finished the things they needed to do they were so great to help with some organization in the attic!

Training with those who work in the office

I caught a picture of our nurses getting ready for their presentation later in the afternoon.  They are such a blessing to all of us here in the mission!

Time for lunch!

Our assistants taught them things about the mission and how to be a missionary.  They were also great to answer questions!

It is always fun to see yourself on the Mission Bulletin Board!

The nurses shared important information about how to stay healthy and answer questions.

I love the part I get to teach.  We talk about pensions and our pension clean day first.  Every 2nd p-day we have "Clean Day".  There are no activities that day.  That is a day to get organized for the transfer.  The pension is to be totally cleans and photos sent to me with a signed cleaning list that it has all been done.  It is so nice to start with a clean pension!  It is also a day to get groceries and if you have been transferred it is a time to move in!

Next we talked about language study.  We talk about the Companionship Language Study Program sponsored by the church to help those who speak Spanish to learn English.  We also talk about ideas for those who are learning Spanish to continue to improve in the ability to speak Spanish!

It was so fun because there were almost and even amount of English speaking missionaries and Spanish speaking missionaries.  They did a practice with each other!  The blessing of learning a language is so great for both!

The assistants did a practice on how to share the "First Vision".

After their example everyone was able to practice.

Then they took them outside and introduced the new pass along cards we just received. After a demonstration they of course were able to...practice!

More good food and a chance for a photo!

Our evening meeting

Time to relax!

A New Day

There were more interviews and those speaking English went to do the work for their Argentina documentation. Those who were not interviewing or filling out paperwork were a great help to Lorena in the kitchen.

Then they had their office training!

One of our favorite members came to visit one of our new missionaries.  She served a mission with his parents and was so excited to see him!
